Neat Sleeper is an artist from North Wales with a practice motivated by the mundane and commonplace, that is rooted in collage and branches out into sculpture, installation, and text.
Product Replacement is an exhibition of paper-collage works from an ongoing series that the artist considers to be a form of détournement, interrogating and subverting advertisements in contemporary fashion & lifestyle magazines in order to erode the original, manipulative intentions and instead construct environments for a more liberated, playful, personal experience.
Through a process of removal, fragmentation and recomposition, these pieces confront and discard superficial symbols of desirability, beauty, and luxury, and in their absence creating spaces in which to consider corporeality, dreams, consumerism, (dis)connections, (dis)comfort… By layering and splicing elements together there is within these works an ambiguity that allows anonymous, figurative shapes to simultaneously deceive us and invite us into an environment where notions regarding space & time, gender & identity, or what is real become uncertain or evasive.
This aspect will be reflected in the transitory nature of curation, with the content and configuration of works being liable to change at short notice.
The former 36 Lime Street Gallery was established in 2009 as an artist run space to provide a platform for emerging and established artists to experiment and take risks with new work. Selected by committee from an open call, 8 proposals are selected and exhibited throughout the year.
The gallery space continues to provide a platform as 36.
