Ode to Number Four is Lizzie Munn’s first solo exhibition since graduating from Newcastle University’s BA Fine Art course this summer. Having been awarded the Forshaw Fine Art Residency she spent the month of July at the British School at Rome, producing her latest paintings in a dedicated live-work studio space. Ode to Number Four will showcase this new body of work. Through a combination of insight and intuition, Lizzie Munn’s work explores a visible tension between the surface and the application of paint. Her gradual process of responding to the fluctuating surface sees the paintings become essentially self-referential- this complex visual language forces forms to appear, disappear and repeat until an internal logic is established. Although each painting is inherently individual, forms and tones drift between works, establishing a constant dialogue in which the viewer becomes complicit.

The former 36 Lime Street Gallery was established in 2009 as an artist run space to provide a platform for emerging and established artists to experiment and take risks with new work. Selected by committee from an open call, 8 proposals are selected and exhibited throughout the year.

The gallery space continues to provide a platform as 36.
