Exposed Coptic Bookbinding Workshop | Yvette Hawkins

WORKSHOP | 11th March 2017 | 1pm - 3.30pm

Yvette Hawkins : Exposed Coptic Bookbinding Workshop

Coptic stitch is a technique originating from Egypt to bind a series of folded pages into a book format.

This workshop will teach the basic coptic stitch to make a hardbacked exposed spine book. Students may also wish to explore the techique in a sculptural form. This technique is ideal for people who want to create traditional format hardbacked books for practical use.

At the end of the session you will create a book to take away with you alongside the knowledge to create books at home using minimal tools.

All materials are provided, however participants can also bring their own materials to incorporate into artist books and sculptures.

This workshop is aimed at artists at all stages of their career and non-artists who are interested in the artist book format. No experience is necessary.

Lead by visual artist Yvette Hawkins who works across installation and sculpture using traditional craft techniques including paper folding, bookbinding and textiles. Yvette is lead artist and founder of Book Apothecary; a travelling museum of artist books.

All materials included. Light refreshments provided. You are welcome to bring a packed lunch with you or buy locally at Ouseburn Farm, The Cluny, Ernest or The Tower cafe around the corner. They are all excellent!

Please note that my studio is located on the 5th floor. Street level is at Level 2.5 with only stair access to the studio.
