Paul Merrick – John Moores Painting Prize 2025

36 Lime Street studio member Paul Merrick is currently exhibiting in the John Moores Painting Prize 2025, one of the UK’s most prestigious painting competitions. Paul’s new works draw on National Geographic images from the 1950s and 60s, exploring hidden traditions, landscapes, and portraits through thickly layered oil on aluminium. His process excavates previous layers of paint to reveal new images of forgotten places and times, balancing figuration and abstraction.
The Prize showcases contemporary painting from across the UK and culminates in a major exhibition every two years at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool.
