Fake Paintings is a two person show of new work by Jane Millican and Seb Trend at 36 Gallery. Coming from a starting point of ‘painting’ each artist employs different processes of making to create work that masquerades as paintings using different materials such as drawing, ceramics or wood.
The exhibition will include recent wall based works and a collaborative wall installation. Through building new gallery walls the artists will expose a ‘hidden painting’ using the fluid patterns of the wood grain as the medium of ‘paint’.
The project will engage with a wide variety of people, and will include workshops responding to work in the show with local charity partners Tyne Housing, Ouseburn Farm and Chilli Studios. A virtual tour of the exhibition will be made and a link to view this will be available from this page and the artist instagram pages once the exhibition opens.
Two new limited edition collaborative prints by Millican and Trend (a lithograph print editioned by Hole Editions and a screen print editioned by artist / printmaker Adam Hogarth) will be available at a special offer price during the run of the exhibition.
Jane Millican graduated with an MFA from Slade school of Fine Art in 2002. She is an artist based in North Tyneside and lecturer in Fine Art at Newcastle University. She has been shortlisted for the John Moores painting prize and Jerwood drawing prize and is represented by Kenneth Paul Lesko Gallery in America.
‘What first appear to be quickly executed gestural paintings reveal themselves to be, in fact, slowly made trompe l’oeil pencil drawings. Beginning with an examination of painting, surface details and the points where fluid colours collide. Jane Millican’s practice has evolved from pure painting – where daubs of paint were fearlessly applied to large canvases – to one where mark making with paint is now the informer of intricate pencil drawings, reversing the traditional practice of the painting following from the pencil sketch, and hovering at the border between abstraction and representation’
Seb Trend graduated from Northumbria University in 2008, he is an artist based in Newcastle, and fires his ceramic paintings at Ouseburn Pottery. Trend last showed at 36 Gallery with his solo show ‘Painting in The Dark’ in 2016, more recent exhibitions include the online group show ‘Lacuna’, presented by Slugtown Gallery, hosted by Arcade on Artsy last summer and he has work in the BALTIC Open Submission Exhibition that can be seen now at BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art.
‘Through a painting process akin to alchemy Trend liquifies and manipulates images, moving photograph emulsion around like paint. His work concerns states of the ‘in-between’: molten and solid, representation and abstraction, the permanent and momentary. He uses slips, oxides, carbonates and glazes to produce paintings transformed by a hidden alchemy at 1260°C. Through his work Trend continues to mix associations of the photograph, the painting and the object.’
The former 36 Lime Street Gallery was established in 2009 as an artist run space to provide a platform for emerging and established artists to experiment and take risks with new work. Selected by committee from an open call, 8 proposals are selected and exhibited throughout the year.
The gallery space continues to provide a platform as 36.
